MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETINGS

2012

JANUARY

We had 12 people in attendance for our January 12th meeting.  Welcome to the visitors!  We hope you'll come back when you get a chance.

Leland and Sue reported on their December trip to New York City.  It was great!  Weather cooperated most of the time and we had lots of great food and sightseeing.  Highlight was probably being in the (tiny) audience of the "Live With Kelly Ripa" show.  Lelan's daughter is still talking about the great sights we saw and the 100+ Santa Clauses running around in Greenwich Village looking for the parties!

Walter brought an interesting report on his trip to South Pacific aboard a freighter.  He got the idea from a report about freighter travel last year from Kevin who regularly travels on freighters.  Lelan and Sue expressed interest in a trip like that!  Check out Aranui3 on the Internet or the minutes below for the minutes on that meeting if you're interested.
Martha is interested in a river cruise in Holland in August.  It would be a horticultural cruise with several dates available.  Check out Vantage River Cruises if you're interested and/or give her a call. ..
Lelan and Sue are beginning to plan a fall trip to Italy.  Proposed is a three week trip, with one week in three apartments or condos.  Please let us know if you're interested.
Proposed date is October.  Please offer your input on where, when and what you'd like to do if you're interested.
Lelan is planning a three day trip to Chicago February 10th.  Hotel on the Magnificent Mile is $60 including breakfast.  Anyone interested?
News is reporting that airfares are dropping!  It might be a good time to plan your vacation or trip.
Insuremytrip.com can be used to compare travel insurance and cancellation protection.
Sue had a call from a person that wanted a companion for her upcoming trip to Dubai, anyone interested, please give Sue a call for her name and phone number.
Next meeting 2-12-12.  Noon, Highland Park Cafeteria.  NO meeting planned in March.

NOVEMBER 2011 MINUTES

Our travel group met November 12th at Highland Park Cafeteria.  This seems to be a convenient location and the service and meeting room seems to work very well for us.  We had ten in attendance, one new person, Martha, and began planning the trip to New York December 8th.  We plan several Christmas programs, shopping and great food!  If you'd like us to consider a long weekend trip or a place you'd like to visit, please let us know.

6 of us would like to plan a trip to Italy for September or October of 2013.  We'd like to consider renting one or two villas to use as a central meeting place.  If you have input or would like to help us with location or things to do, please let us know or if you would like to be included in this trip.

Park Cities YMCA is planning a trip to Kimball Museum in Ft. Worth November 29th.  Cost is $25.00 with lunch on your own.  Please call Lana at 214-526-7293 for more information.  This is an active group that plans several trips.

Many of us have pets to consider when travelling.  A new pet resort, Paradise 4 Paws has opened on the north side of D/FW.  They may not be for the budget-minded, but would be very convenient and upscale. Their phone number is 972-456-0010.  Several of us use high school kids, college kids or neighbors to look after the pets when we travel.  Several options are available, such as services to come daily to feed and take care of the pets.

We won't meet in December.  We'll plan to meet Jan. 14th and February 11th at Highland Park Cafeteria at noon.

OCTOBER MINUTES

Seven of us met at Highland Park Cafeteria on Saturday.  It was an informal, informative meeting.

Lelan and Sue began planning the December 8th trip to New York City.  They plan plenty of shopping, great restaurants and entertainment.  Five people are going, including Lelan's daughter who has never been to NYC.  She's very excited about having lunch at the Plaza Hotel.  She has wanted to see the Plaza since watching the movie, "Big Business" with Bette Midler and Lilly Tomlin when she was very young.  This trip is what Travel Chums is all about.  We're excited to get to know each other and will enjoy the company as well as the sightseeing and the whole holiday.

If anyone has an idea for a long weekend trip, let us know.  We're fun and enjoy travel!  You may meet a lifelong travel buddy!

A very important discussion was regarding our legal issues and making sure our wills are up to date.  None of us expect to die anytime soon, but we don't know when it will be, "our time," instead of someone else's.  It's important to make sure our families and loved ones are informed of our last wishes and
legal provisions are made.  Lelan knows of several stories where an ex was left large insurance settlements when the insured probably would have wanted current wives and families to have the money.  It's estimated that over half of the population will die intestate.  There's no excuse for that because you can buy a will at an office supply store or online and do it yourself without spending a lot of money!

More grumblings about bankruptcy for American Airlines.  We'd hate to see that happen because of so many local vendors and employees of American.  Remember, the best protection the consumer has when buying an airline ticket is using a credit card.  A debit card doesn't automatically offer the same protection!  Lelan nearly froze to death in a hotel room one night without heat and was unable to get a refund because he used a debit card and not a credit card to pay!

Our next meeting is planned for Highland Park on 11-12-11 at 2:30 p.m.  It should be noted in the newspaper, but they tend to leave it out regularly.  Please come and bring a guest!

The December 17th meeting will probably be cancelled.  Please let us know if you want to meet in December.  It seems many people are already making party, travel and family plans.  It will be cancelled unless several people want to meet.

Please remember this group is for travel and fun and friendships!  Let us know how we're meeting those goals.

SEPTEMBER MINUTES 2011

A big, "Thank You!" to Frances for moderating our monthly meeting on Saturday.  We had 11 in attendance.  Welcome to Toby, Connie and Suki!  We hope to see you again soon.

We discussed jet lag.  It can be a real problem and most of us seem to have our own way of coping.  There's a website, stopjetlag.com.  You can have your own plan developed to help you adjust to a new time zone.  Many people suggest staying awake as long as possible, then sleeping/resting to adjust to the local time. Others suggest sleeping while enroute so you can, "hit the ground" running.  Also, it's important to drink water and get up and move around while travelling on long flights to increase your blood circulation.

Two travel companies were suggested that might be of help in finding a travel companion when we may have to go solo.  Vantage Travel and NCL will let you request a travel companion.  It might be worth a try when you're thinking you may be travelling alone.

Don't forget Park Cities YMCA's trip to Eureka Springs in October.  Check their website or call Laura Denson, 214-526-7293, ext. 119 for more information.

Garland Senior Citizens is an excellent group to join for a trip.  They're very friendly and seem to always have great trips in the works.  Rusty is excellent at welcoming newcomers.  rmaxwell@ci.garland.tx.us or call 972-205-2769.

Richland College offers travel through an emeritus program.  972-238-6100 for more information.

KAAM is a terrific radio station and very travel friendly.  They offer travel through silvertravel.us.  Check their website or call 866-947-4583 for more information.

Don't forget New York December 8th or 9th through the 11th.  Sue is working on finding an apartment to rent or a hotel close to a subway stop.
Radio City Music Hall's Christmas show is a must and tours are now available to the World Trade Center Memorial.  Please let us know your thoughts if you're interested.  It's not a guided trip, but we'll all be flexible and ready for a great time shopping and sightseeing.  Lelan just bought his Southwest Air ticket for $129.00 from Love Field to Newark.  The cost to Manhattan is about $12.00 from Newark.

There seems to be some confusion about e-mail addresses.  We really need an e-mail address to make sure you're informed about all the upcoming events and trips.  If we don't have an e-mail address, there's no way to get the information to you.  Let me know if your e-mail address is to be for private use only.

Next meeting: October 22nd, Highland Park Cafeteria, 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm.  Hope to see you then!

AUGUST MINUTES 2011

12 of us met August 13th at the Highland Park Cafeteria.  This location seems to work for most of us.  For some reason we weren't scheduled for the meeting room.  We'll try to make sure there's no repeat of that error for our Sept. 10th meeting.

Sandra told us of her using Skype and it's benefits while travelling overseas.  She uses it at home and is very pleased with the use and cost of Skype.
They seem to have upgraded the benefits, and offer several plans, so you may want to check it out for your travel and home use.

Lelan and Sue are planning to go to New York City Dec. 9-11th.  The plans are flexible and everyone is invited for the shopping and sightseeing.  They plan to go on the 8th and arrive at LGA around noon.  This is a semi-on-your-own trip and everyone is invited to join in.  Remember, there are no travel agents in our group, but the purpose of the group is to get to know a travel buddy and enjoy trips and save money by travelling with friends!  This trip will probably include Chinatown, plenty of shopping and sightseeing with great restaurants.  If you want to go, please let us know what you want to do and where you want to stay.  Lelan and Sue suggest a cheaper hotel close to a subway station.  The Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacluar is not to be missed!

The Park Cities YMCA is planning a trip to Eureka Springs.  Please contact them for details.

The Garland Senior Citizens group is very travel oriented and would welcome anyone for a fun trip.  We've met with them and they seem like a great group for travel.  Please contact Rusty at 972-205-2769 for more information.  It seems like they're planning a trip to San Antonio Dec. 2-4 and Costa Rica Feb. 18-28th.

Good Time Travel Club meets the first Sunday of each month.  They plan a great Christmas party.  Please contact Sue for more information.

Madeline is interested in antique shops and a great B and B in Waxahachie, TX.  Please contact her if interested.

Oasis Overland Adventure Travel plans great Africa trips.  Info@oasisoverland.co.uk

Thanks to all attendees on Saturday. We have a great group and we hope it continues to grow. You can help by letting the group know where you want to go and what you want to do.  Let us know of travel bargains you come across!

July Minutes 2011:  It was great to see such a great turn-out for our monthly meeting!  We had 22 in attendance.  Great to see the regulars and we especially want to welcome the newcomers!  We hope you'll all try to come back when you can.  Upcoming meeting dates: Aug. 13th, Sept. 10th and Oct. 22.  Highland Park Cafeteria seems to work for most of us and is an excellent meeting facility.

Sue emphasized the importance of travel insurance.  Keep in mind that all the coverage's seem to have "fine print."  There are several types of insurance, such as trip cancellation, trip interruption, health insurance and evacuation coverage.  Keep in mind what insurance you have and keep in mind you may be a long way from home and your local doctors.  We all know of great stories of how great insurance coverage was when it was needed and a few times when someone needed the coverage and had declined it.  It seems most travel group leaders encourage the purchase, but the ultimate decision is with the traveler and it's up to the traveler to make an informed decision.

The Garland Senior Citizens group is planning trips to Costa Rica and Alaska.  Their next meeting is planned for Aug. 17th, 2:00 pm.  They are a friendly group and would welcome anyone to join their travel group.  Rusty is helpful and can be reached at 972-205-2769.

KLUV, 98.7 fm is a travel-friendly radio station.  They advertise vacation get-a-ways and give away trips fairly regularly.  They will even help the singles "pair-up" for additional savings for travel.  We might want to check them out when we're listening to the radio.

A few of us are planning to go to New York City December 9-12th.  It's not too early to begin checking airfare and Broadway shows. If you're interested and would offer input for your preferences, please let Lelan or Sue know.  It's semi-on your own.  We want everyone to have a great time, so it you want the Grayline tours, we'll help you arrange that.  If you simply want to share a room or some expenses and do most things on your own, that's ok too.  New York has great Christmas shows in spite of any cold weather we may encounter.  Bring walking shoes!  Also, the city has handicapped bus transportation that is very reasonably priced, but has a few requirements.

Houston has an interesting Chinatown that a couple of us has expressed interest in seeing.

Sue wants to take a trip up the East Coast.  Lelan likes that idea too. So, if anyone has ideas for that, let us know.

Sue is planning a 7 week trip to Asia from Feb. 29 to April 18th.  Sounds exciting, but we don't think grandsons are invited!  She had a great time in Scotland with her grandson, but the driving was nerve-wrecking and she came home with very short fingernails!

Don't forget that Lelan and a couple of others are interested in Italy in the fall.  It's new territory for them.  Any ideas on dates and sites would be appreciated!

Thanks to everyone who takes time to check travel deals and help pass along the information.

June Meeting 2011

Those in attendance:  Sue, Lelan,  Linda, Loretta, Margaret, Walter, Alma and Frances. New attendees were Shirlee and Madeline.

Our monthly meeting was held June 11, 2011 at the Highland Park Cafeteria, 1200 N. Buckner, corner of SE corner of Buckner and Garland Road.
Their phone is 214-324-5000.  Consensus was that this is a very good meeting place because they provide a meeting room for $1.00 per person.  Their location seems centrally located and easy to find.  Our next meeting is scheduled there on July 16th.  Meal at 12 noon, meeting at 1:00 pm.

Sue expressed concern for health insurance coverage while out of the country.  We all need to be aware of the limitations of group insurance and especially Medicare, if not in the U.S.  Lelan provided policy benefits of Plan F, an individual policy to supplement Medicare.  Benefits may be provided, up to $50,000 at 80%, but that's individual insurance coverage.  Also, many polices limit pre-existing conditions.  This is an important consideration when traveling outside the U.S.  Evacuation back home is another consideration and can be very expensive.  Most trip cancellation policies don't include health insurance or evacuation coverage.

Several members expressed interest in attending local entertainment events such as symphony and theater.  We're encouraging everyone to let the group know of any interests you have.  It would be great to meet and go to a play or concert.  Please make your preferences known.

Also, Loretta suggested that we all let the group know when we find a special travel bargain.  She has had to miss several hot travel bargains because she didn't have anyone to go with her. I think that's the reason many of us are in the group and we want to get to know friends who are interested in travel.  Most of us had rather travel with someone if we feel comfortable with them and have mutual interests.

Sue suggested we all become friends on Face book so she can keep the group informed better. Her name is Lavonda Sue Irvine and will confirm your friend request on Face book.

Lelan suggested we plan a trip to New York in early or mid-December.  He emphasized that he's not a travel agent, but has been there several times and will offer input and assistance for everyone to enjoy visiting the great city.  December is a great time to visit because of the Christmas shows and fantastic shopping.  Please let him know of any interest you have and include preferences, such as hotel cost limitations and preferred dates.  Most of us seemed to like the idea of a moderately priced hotel near the subway.  Physical limitations are an important issue because there's so much to see and do in New York.

We have a great group and we all look forward to seeing you in July for more travel news!

Thanks so much for the meeting notes taken by Lelan this month and Linda volunteered to put the notice in the paper each month.  Sue

APRIL MEETING 2011

We had about 10 members attending, no new members.  We discussed keeping in touch with home while on travels, how our members did so with Skype and other means.  We ate and had a short meeting, no meeting for May due to my show and travel schedule.  I encouraged members to attend another travel club meeting for May and gave information to that effect.

MARCH MEETING 2011

We had 9 returning and 6 new members although I counted 20 people so some did not check off that they were attending. I passed around several sheets that I had run off the internet on some of my favorite places to secure trips and a travel agent that had sent me information (Nancy Kane with Heritage Tours, 214-358-2032.  I also passed around an email from Sue Hamby who lives in Temple, and was looking for a roommate for a friend on her trip to Dubai this month (discover@vvm.com)  Someone from my FSR TRAVEL GROUP was looking for a roommate on her trip to Greek Islands, sometime in Sept. or Oct. (nguyeu82@gmail.com) .  I also listed my VACTIONSTOGO.COM web site as a great place to go to get discount cruises and tours from all tour operators.  I found on the internet RiverCruise.com which is a division of vacationstogo.com and passed around a page off the web on SmarTours.com.  I also found another website1800flyeurope which is another travel web site.  I had an email from a tour operator in Kenya (njiiriek@yahoo.com, Karanja Evans) soliciting customers for his tour company and another one on the Maldives, www.letsgomaldives.com if any of you are interested.  Kevin, who has traveled extensively, gave us a very interesting talk on his travels with freighters and one in particular which is a mail/supple vessel that travels the Marquesas Island.

The Aranui sails every 3-4 weeks FROM TAHITI TO THE MARQUESAS ISLANDS. It connects local communities, calling at the principal villages, as well as several remote areas, on every inhabited island.

I hope to have speakers at each meeting from here on, bringing you information on travels of our members and other items relating to travel.  If you would be willing to give a short talk on one of your trips that was interesting, please contact me.  You can find out more about freighter travel by putting that word in your search engine.  There was quite a bit of interest in the travel to the Marquesas Islands on the Aranui.  If you are interested, email me and maybe we could put together a trip.  I do need someone to take minutes of the meetings so I can concentrate on conducting it.  I know I miss taking down something's we talk about because I am involved in them..  If you would be interested, or in helping me conduct the meetings, (pass out name tags, be sure everyone signs the roster, maybe taking pictures, please let me know.

AUGUST MEETING

Our next meeting will be September 19th at the Highland Park Cafeteria, located at 1200 North Buckner Blvd. That is at the intersection of Garland Road and Loop 12. Easiest way I know to get there is Northwest Highway East of 75  to Loop 12, South on Loop 12.  Highland Park Cafeteria will be on your left side right after you cross Garland Road or Hwy 78.  If you are coming from 635, you can take the Garland Road exit and go back under 635.  I am changing the time of the meeting to 2:00 because it will start getting darker later in the year at 5:00.  I will be there around 12:45 to 1:00 eating if anyone would like to join me. I have reserved the room in my name (Sue Irvine/The Travel Club)  (Note:  the room is free if there is at least 75% of us eating, if not, then there is a $50.00 charge for the room.  I am finding that at every place that has a room, they want at least $50 to book room.

Madeleine and Alma were nice enough to call around for locations to hold meetings.  1/2 price bookstore has a nice room but not available on Sunday or weekends.  I welcome suggestions you have researched on where we can hold meetings in hopefully (private) rooms with no charge.  If there is a charge, then we will divide the number of people at meeting and ask that each person contribute towards the $50.00 charge so it won't be a burden on anyone..

Please put these dates on your calendar for our next meetings: October 10 and November 14th.  We will discuss meeting in December although I have no objections.  I know, if you are going on tours next year, we need to get our airline reservations now if we are using frequent flyer miles and I heard last night, that AA will be going up on their rates and they are the only carrier that flies to Europe non-stop from DFW ( at least that is what I thought I heard)  They also said it is cheaper to have a lay-over that to fly non-stop.

Also have another tour company, Smartours.com.  They and Gate1.com, if you will sign up, they will send you quick deals and they will really save you money if you can jump on them.

Each person introduced themselves and told a little about where they had been, where they wanted to go, how they wanted to travel (tour or independent), land or cruises. Sue Irvine, moderator, shared her trip to Cambodia including pictures.

The meeting was tuned over to everyone to get to know their fellow travelers and some told where they wanted to go and asked if anyone else was interested.

I was asked to share some of my travel sites and they will be listed at the bottom of this newsletter.

Leland said he bid on weeks on time shares and sometimes got them for great prices.

Some of the web sites where I find good prices on cruises/tours are:

Vacationstogo.com register, it is free and they sometimes email you when they have specials.

Right-travel.com register, it is free and they will email you on specials.

Gate1.com         register, they will email you with bargains.  When they do, time is of the essence if you want to get the best discount; sometimes you only have a week to make reservations so check your email every day if you want the bargains.

If you go on the Vacations To Go Web site, it has places for cruises; land tours and build your own tour.

If you find any more, please let me know.  The web is a great place.  Just type in where you want to go and put cheap in front of it and go where it sends you.  Interested in the weather where you are going, do the same thing, Put weather in Italy in Fahrenheit and it will lead you to a web site.  I just found one for cheap airline flights last night, it is Cheapair.com.  If I am looking at it right, it was $708 for RT to Spain, tourist class.

I am a member of several travel clubs on line. www.AARP.com, single travelers, www.travelchums.com (if would be nice if everyone would join this site, it is free, and let us know the name you are using on it.)  You fill out an extensive profile, and if we are going to get to know each other, then we need to know more information about you if you want to share a room to see if you are compatible with the person you want to travel with. This would be an easy way to do it instead of doing one in our group.  My profile is under Honeysuckle , Madeline's is MadOwlLady. Go to web site and look us up! !  Another one is  femalesingleretireestravel@googlegroups.com,cstn-friends@googlegroups.com, www.travelchums.com.  I was on-line the other day and saw one for female Christians that travel.

I really don't know where I want to go next but know I want to be gone longer than 2 weeks.  Look up my profile, check out these two tours, or a long one to Spain, Portugal and Morocco and if you are interested, give me a call.  I am looking at about April 15, next year.

Click here: The Grand European 2011 - Cosmos

If anyone has been on a Cosmos tour, please give me a call, would like to know about their optional tours, and how much they usually cost.  They don't give that information out until you have booked your trip.

Anyone interested in a trip to Dubai and the Middle East, I met a lady on-line that is going on a planned trip(cruise) at great prices, April 18.  21 days from $2299 with free air.  If you are interested, call me.

Also, a lady that I met in Turkey last year and did a lot with, wants to do a cruise on the Nile and wants several days in Cairo independently.  Looking for someone to be a companion, separate rooms.  Around 8-12 days in Feb.

I will try not to email more than twice a month, hopefully not even that.  Could not get the 1/2 price books room on a week-end, looking into Le Madeline and will let you'all know when we get a place and a schedule.

Thank all of you for coming and let me know what you want out of a travel club.  I formed it primarily to meet new people to travel with and share a room with so I don't have to pay the single supplement and, of course, learn.

MINUTES OF SEPT. MEETING

We had our 3rd travel club meeting with 9 people, 6 new people and 3 returning ones.  I know a lot of you from our 1st and 2 meetings are traveling and we would love to see you back at the next meeting.  Welcome to our new travelers.  I learn so much from each of you.

We introduced ourselves, I passed around the roster and list of places you'all want to go and where you have been.  Corrections will be made and emailed to those of you who have attended meetings.  I talked about my experiences with Gate 1 tour group, we discussed other tour groups, talked about Travel Guard to protect your trip with insurance, experiences with medical problems traveling, discussed untour, expedition trips, and travel with cars overseas.

This group is for you so please let me know what subjects you want to see talked about.  I would like anyone that has been to Scotland, Ireland and England to talk about that next meeting and bring pictures, etc. that you think would be of interest.  We are real informal, so please don't be shy.

Our next 2 meetings will be October 10th and November 14, Sundays, from 2-4 at the same place, Highland Park Cafeteria, South East Corner of Garland Road and Buckner in Garland.  This time we will be in the small room.  I have found that most places that have rooms expect you to either eat there or pay for the room. Most places that I have talked to  charge $50.00 for the room so if you don't want to eat there, please bring $5.00 to help pay for the room.  In addition, the cafeteria ask that each person contribute $1.00 for the wait person assigned to the room.  NOTE:  I will go early, around 1:00 to eat and invite anyone else to join me.  We have the smaller meeting room from 1-4, meeting is from 2-4 approximately.

There is no charge for the travel club but since we don't know each other, we have to, at this point, keep meeting in a public place in to make it comfortable and safe for our meet and greet.

I will be sending out a new roster to all of those who have attended a meeting so if you need to make corrections to the old one, please email me by next weekend.

I did intend to get this out last week but my computer was in the shop and I took my husbands computer with me on a trip Wed. and his hard drive blew up so there went my good intentions.  I will be out of town until Sunday night and will get the new roster out after that.

I can always be reached on my cell phone if anyone needs to contact me.  I will be out of reach of my email from Wed. noon until Sunday night.

MINUTES OF OCTOBER 11 MEETING

We had 4 new people attending and 5 returning members.  New members are at bottom of this list.

We discussed what to look for in a roommate or companion.  I shared a web site:www.travelchums.com that I and Madeline are members of.  It is free to join the web site.  You fill out an extensive questionnaire.  I believe it is a very safe website for this reason.  You do not sign up with your name, you do not give out any information that you can be traced by.  You do give out your age, and your city but without a name, it would be hard for someone to trace you.  I would suggest you put up a picture if you are going to join the web site.  Personally, I would not want to contact anyone that I have not seen.

Joining this website and filling out the questionnaire would really be the first step in communicating with someone else that you want to travel with.  I think this would be an excellent starting point if you are considering someone in our group or anywhere else as a travel companion.  It is a good ice breaker and helps to get to know the other person before you commit yourself.  It asks so many questions, some you may not have thought of.   You do have some leeway after the questions to add your own comments.   You do not give out your email or telephone number.  If someone wants to contact you, they do so thru the website and you don’t get a reminder when you have messages, so you have to check in regularly to see if you do.  They virtually eliminate spam by allowing an individual only 10 messages to others in a day’s time.  Of course, if you do want to “meet” someone on that site, you can later give out your personal email, etc. when you feel comfortable with that person.

I also shared my travel experiences with a person that I met on one of my travel clubs, good and bad and Madeline had just gotten back from a trip and she shared her experiences with her cabin mate.  The more we know about the person we are traveling with, the better.  Another person shared her experiences with a good friend that she traveled with for the first time and it was an example of no matter how well you think you know someone, you don’t.  Another reason I believe the questionnaire is great.

If you do go on the web site and join, please email us and let us know your moniker so we can look you up.  Mine is Honeysuckle and Madeline’s is MadOwlLady.

As for our group, it would greatly simplify matters if you did their questionnaire so we don’t need to do one in the group.

 MINUTES OF DECEMBER MEETING

I have had several calls from people wanting us to meet at their venue and have been waiting back to hear from them to send the minutes but they have not gotten back with me.  I had a very upscale retirement home in Garland wanting us to meet there so that their residents could attend the next meeting.  They even offered to comp our lunch.  I have not heard back from them and wanted to get this out.  I also have received an invitation from the Garland Senior Citizen Activity Center wanting us to host a meeting there.  I have not made any arrangements so far with either one although I believe that would be a viable option for the future.  As it stands now, we will be going back to Spring Creek Bar-B-Q on Midway, west side, south of Beltline in Dallas.  When I called Highland Park Cafeteria, they did not have a room available. After I hear from the 2 venues listed above, I will try to secure reservations for the next 6 months in advance.  Please check my website for updates and future dates.

One of our members, Leland, who proposed a trip to Las Vegas has emailed me.  Below is his email.  If you are interested in going with him, please contact him directly and as soon as possible so he can make arrangements for the trip.

I'm thinking about Las Vegas, but needed your thoughts.  I'd suggest Feb., but Celine Dion's show is in March.  Please put this idea out to the group.  Feb itinerary:  arrive Sun or Mon pm.  dinner.  Then, Cirque du Soleil with dinner the next night.  During the day, I'll rent a van so we can go see the new Hoover Dam canyon bridge.  Next day go about 40 mi south to Prim, NV for discount shopping.  Day would be mostly on your own or smaller groups for casinos, shopping, etc.   If we go late March or in April we would try to go see Celine.  I'd prob prefer Celine, but Feb is ok also.  I'm flex and will arrange hotel and day trips in a van at no charge.  I'd suggest Southwest from Love, but either is ok.  I'd go from Lubbock and meet everyone at airport in LAS.  Please let me know your thoughts.  Lelan  806-535-5340.

MINUTES OF DECEMBER 19 MEETING:

We welcomed 8 new people and had 7 returning members present.  I brought some information about my planned trip to Scotland and showed how I got ready for a trip.  1st stop, 1/2 price book store where I picked up 4 books on Scotland, I also found 3-4 magazines from Scotland.  I like the travel magazine, Budget Traveler and members suggested several other magazines that had been helpful to them.  Because I am the moderator, it is sometimes hard for me to write down all that happened in a meeting.  Have to rely on my faulty memory.  We just had general discussions, Leland proposed a trip (email above) on a trip he wanted to take to Las Vegas and invited those members that were interested to contact him about it.  If you are interested, call him and you'all decide on a month or date.  I had everybody present look over the web pages I created for corrections and added to the rooster.  If anyone sees any information that is wrong on the website, (like I have the picture with the wrong information), please let me know.  website: www.honeysucklerose.info  NOTE:  Have all the pictures up on web site that I have taken so far.

I talked to several people after the meeting and hope, in the future, to have more members sharing with us.  After all, these meetings are for the purpose of getting to know someone else and if I always do all the talking, then how are you going to get to know anyone else.  Please feel free to email me on subjects you want discussed and if you would like to hear from a particular member on their travels.

Ann Marie did share with us that in Rome, it is very expensive to rent a car because there is nowhere to park it and you have to pay a per day diem just to have one in the city.  Little items like that are very valuable to know when you are planning a trip.

I was talking with Kevin after the meeting and he was saying that he has been on several container ships as a guest and I, for one, would like to know more about that avenue of travel which he says is relaxing, food good and so are the staterooms.  Maybe he will share about that type of travel in one of our meetings.  Talking with Peter, I believe he said he was from Scotland.  We have a wealth of information on trips to be shared from our membership because some have been on so many trips to so many places.  Look for more sharing over the next year.

I also put the previous minutes up on the web site, at least the ones that I had. If anyone has the ones that I am missing, please email them to me so I can put them up.   All new minutes will be put up on web site, updated roster is only thing that will be emailed in the future, or invitations to travel.  That's it for now.

The Roster of members is a word document and is attached to this email.  Again, if I have gotten something wrong, please let me know.

FROM LELAND TO SUE, 12/27/10

I checked on the Las Vegas trip and found a really good deal.  Hotel room, not on the strip, but I'll have a van and can help w/transportation.

Suggested itinerary:  I plan to fly to Las on 3-21-11 and stay at the Club De Soleil All-Suite Resort.  Room rate is about $50 per night.
Celine Dion tickets are avail on Tue or Wed night.  Cost is about $125.00 each.  See Cirque du Soleil Tue or Wed., Hoover Dam Wed and shopping/casinos in between.  Fly home on Thurs. the 24th.  Please let me know if interested.  I'll provide help for anyone who hasn't been.  I'll provide a van at my cost for the trips to Hoover Dam and Prim, discount shopping.  Please let me know.  I'd suggest getting the Celine Dion tickets asap because they're probably selling fast.  Thanks, Lelan  806-535-5340

MINUTES OF JANUARY MEETING

We had a great lunch furnished by Churchill Estates at Lake Highlands Retirement Facility and had a wonderful meeting in their media room.  They have invited us back for March and I am looking forward to it.  We had 16 attending, 8 old members and 8 new members, a good crowd.  Leland passed out sheets on his proposed trip to Las Vegas and told us a little bit more about what he wanted to do.  He will rent a van, pick you up at the airport, take you back to the airport, furnish transportation to shopping, Hoover Dam Bridge, and 2 shows.  Sounds like a lot of fun, would really like to see the shows he has picked out, but of course, you don't have to do what he has scheduled, you can do your own thing.  He also mentioned that he and Ann Marie, another member who has been to Italy every year for many years, are tentatively planning a trip to Italy in November. Our attendees introduced themselves, told where they lived, where they had traveled and where they wanted to go. I'm planning a trip to Australia next year and could use 2 more people on that trip to make 4.  Those of you in North Dallas or further, hang on, I will schedule meetings over that way but this one at Garland Sr. Citizen Center was already in the works and then the lady from the Retirement Center called and wanted another meeting over there and i could not pass up free lunch.  We adjourned our meeting around 3:30 or 4:00.

MINUTES OF FEBRUARY MEETING

We ate at Hubbards Restaurant in downtown Garland with 4 returning members and 1 new member from Denton.  We joined the ladies from the Garland Senior Citizen Center and one of their employees, Rusty.  I did not count all of them but there were about 10 ladies there from the Center.  Rusty explained the travel program there and told about some of the trips they have been on and what is scheduled for this year.  All their trips are fully planned with guides, etc and I believe Rusty goes on all the trips.  You do not have to be a resident of Garland nor going to the Senior Citizen Center to register for their trips.  While they do not do formal matchups, I understand that they will try to match you up with someone so you don't have to pay single supplement.  They are going to have a Mystery Overnight April 8-10, Courthouse Overnight, June 10-11, Northern National Parks, Sept 2-9, San Antonio Christmas Dec. 2-4 and Tropical Costa Rica, Feb. 18-28, 2012. I believe they also have a casino trip planned.  You can contact the Senior Citizen Center for a list of their trips planned this year.  We had several people that were interested in our travel club and I have included them on the rooster and updated the membership and pictures.  OUR MARCH MEETING WILL BE HELD MARCH 12TH, SATURDAY, AT CHURCHILL ESTATES AT LAKE HIGHLANDS RETIREMENT FACILITY, 8501 LULLWATER DRIVE, DALLAS, TEXAS  75238, AT 12:30, MEETING WILL BE AT 1:30.  THEY WILL COMP US (FREE LUNCH) SO MUST HAVE RESERVATIONS IN BY MARCH 9TH.  Madeline will be back in town and I hope at the meeting and maybe  she will give us a report on her trip.  We have had some more members on trips lately and would love to hear reports.    If you have done something unusual or a trip,  we would love to hear about it.
